North Myrtle Beach also known as “Home of the Shag” is a city in Horry County, South Carolina. The city was created back in 1968 from four existing municipalities north of Myrtle Beach that served as one of the primary tourist towns along the Grand Strand. The 9 miles long beach community of North Myrtle Beach continues to grow, after over 50 years of its inception. Famous annual festivals celebrate everything from St. Patrick’s Day to the end of summer. North Myrtle Beach is the birthplace of the Shag dance which evolved to be the official state dance of South Carolina in 1984.
Residents of the city can hear strains of beach music in the Ocean Drive section almost every night as fans of the Shag dance the night away. Adults can always find entertainments of all kinds and other activities that provide family fun. Everyone loves the small town charm of the community and it is home to Barefoot Landing and a wide variety of restaurants, entertainment, and shopping options. As of 2010, a census showed the population of the city to be 13,752 and in 2016, the estimated population was seen at 16,032. The Myrtle Beach, Conway, North Myrtle Beach metropolitan area had a combined population of 449,295 as of 2016.
